Rain seldom falls in this region and aside from the permanent waterholes. The average rainfall varies in different areas. The average amount is between 100-350. It has the largest drainage system and is composed of the remains of the ancient rock shield. The Western Plateau covers two thirds of Australia. In Western Australia there has been many earthquakes that have been known to occur since 1824 when the European Settles arrived. The last earthquake that has happened in Western Australia was in 2001.
